Top tips for organizing your little flower girl for your big day
If you’ve chosen the little ones to be your flower girls, they’re sure to give some ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as they follow you down the aisle on your big day. Mind you, to get on the perfect stage, we have a few tips for you.
“Dressing flower girls, bridesmaids and bellboys can be stressful, especially when you’re of different ages, sizes and different strong opinions. However, small children can be a great way to connect you, the star of the show, with the older bridesmaids,” says Nicki MacFarlane, flower girl dress designer.
Nicki would know all about the stress of dressing flower girls as she had the monumental task of creating the dresses for Catherine, the Princess of Wales’ mini maids, at the royal wedding in 2011!

“Remember, kids are growing, so it’s important to keep buying outfits for little ones as close to the wedding date as possible,” says Nicki. “We recommend no more than three months before the wedding and make sure the kids try them on before the big day if possible if any changes are needed.”
Make sure the flower girl dress is comfortable
Comfort should always be a factor when it comes to wedding party attire, but Nicki believes this is especially true for the younger members. “If the kids wear something scratchy and uncomfortable all day, they’re going to be miserable!” She adds. “Make sure you buy something lined and the best quality you can afford.”
The flower girl dress is your choice
“Don’t let the kids’ parents — or the kids themselves — influence you too much when choosing your flower girl dresses,” Nicki advises. “Remember, it’s your wedding – you get to choose whatever style and color you like.” We couldn’t agree more!
One style doesn’t fit all
There are many ways to dress your flower girls, bridesmaids and bellboys to complement you most effectively. If you have kids of different ages, or even a mix of adults and children, don’t be afraid to mix and match styles of clothing.
“It looks very chic to have all your companions in the same fabric but in different, age-appropriate styles,” says Nicki. “A wedding I did recently had girls in different pastel shades – it looked stunning. Alternatively, you can dress older bridesmaids in one color and then choose a white or ivory dress for the flower girls and choose the color of the sash and buttons.”
Keep the little ones entertained and engaged
When you have young children at the wedding, you must always think about entertainment. Nicki recommends providing paper and pens at the ceremony to keep little ones calm.
“If possible, it makes sense to set up a separate playroom at reception for toys and DVDs,” she continues. “Some people hire a nanny for a few hours so moms and dads can enjoy the celebrations too!”
At wedding ideas Magazine, we always say that small children need a break to relax and unwind. They’ll probably want to walk around the front desk excitedly, so it’s good if you have an area to burn off that excess energy.
If the weather is good, maybe that could be your venue’s garden (although, for obvious reasons, you’ll need to take all the photos first!)
“To keep your little ones happy, you can have traditional board games, card games and coloring books set out – although I wouldn’t recommend markers!” says top blogger Daniela of Bridesmaid.com.
“Books are a great idea if you know your girls love to read. Give them as a gift and make sure they can check them out while the chaos of preparations unfolds around them.”
Otherwise, you’re going to use old failsafe technology! “Electronic devices always keep kids distracted and occupied,” agrees Daniela. “Have an iPad set up so the kids can watch a movie or play a game. Or put a DVD on the TV or laptop.”

When choosing clothes, Daniela thinks that the girls should have a say in what they wear. “Choose at least three different styles for the flower girls to try on and let them choose what they feel most comfortable in,” she advises. “I would recommend flat shoes or those with a small heel.”
With so many styles to choose from these days, what does Daniela recommend for the perfect flower girl look? “Personally, I love princess-like dresses on flower girls—those with lots of layers of tulle,” says Daniela. “I’ve seen flower girls be the same shade as the bridesmaids’ dresses, or all white like the bride.”

“Don’t forget to take a picture of you and the groom with the flower girls. You’ll get top marks for cuteness and they’ll love to get involved,” says Daniela. Just remember to do this as soon as possible after the ceremony while they are still clean and tidy.

You may have a very sweet little niece, goddaughter, or family friend, but you really don’t want a little one who is likely to be overcome with shyness and refuse to walk down the aisle.

Also, try not to choose children who are just too young – we wouldn’t advise a toddler, for example.
