B’LOVED spoke to Kate for her top tips on how modern brides should think about dressing and style their bridal shower for their big day.
Kate, where should you start when choosing outfits for your bridal shower?
There is a lot to consider when it comes to choosing bridesmaid dresses, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. I would start by narrowing down the color scheme and speaking to your party about your ideas and specific needs from you and them – for example, shoulder covering in church or maybe a scar or tattoo your bridesmaid would prefer to cover up on the day. Then it’s time to get inspired, so check out Pinterest or Instagram for styles that you all like and agree with. Be aware of your bridesmaids’ current style and the type of silhouettes they typically wear when going out. The inspiration behind the Sister collection was that no two of my friends would wear the same thing. There are options for every body shape to make everyone feel great.
What is currently trending with bridesmaids?
To be honest, I never pay attention to trends. Who cares what everyone else is doing? Do your own thing! Since weddings have been in a state of uncertainty for over a year, I think anything is possible right now! Couples tear up the rulebook and I love that.
Synced or mismatched?
Mismatching. No two bodies are alike, so I love when bridesmaids can express themselves in their outfits, but the overall look is consistent and still works for the wedding. That way, they’re more likely to choose pieces that they love and will wear again after the big day.
If you don’t match what is the best way to achieve this look?
There are so many ways to do this that look great, but the easiest is to have everyone in the same fabric then everyone can choose the exact outfit they are comfortable in and everyone is happy. Another suggestion would be the same outfit (if everyone agrees on the shape!) In different colors or tones of the same color, or maybe all in different variations of the same print. There are so many options and as long as the couple loves the overall effect is everything possible!
Any tips for decorating your wedding party?
I would take their individual style into account as not everything has to be the same unless you want to. Personally, I love it when bridesmaids have different bouquets, for example. Have fun with it! At my wedding, the flower girls wore cute little rabbit ears and the pages wore owl outfits with little felt capes that looked like wings. They loved her and had so much fun playing. It’s your wedding, so be it whimsical, cool, silly or serious when it comes to accessories or anything else!
What should you do if your bridesmaids have different body shapes?
I would just ask my bridesmaids what they would most like to wear or if there are absolute no-gos for them. Discuss your ideas and send them all the styles you love. People can be very accommodating when it comes to weddings, but we all have parts of our bodies that we’d rather highlight than others and I think it would be a shame if someone is dissatisfied with an outfit that has been chosen for them, when he is there there are so many nice alternatives.
